Why GFA sacked Winfried Schäfer

Date:

Experienced German football expert Winfried Schäfer has disclosed why he abruptly left his role at the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The former coach of Cameroon, well-versed in African Football and its technicalities, was appointed by the GFA in 2025 as the Technical Director.

His role goes beyond the scope of simply advising on the Black Stars of Ghana as many imagined.

Schafer was obligated to oversee not only the technical guidance, but also the overall development of football in the country.

With his experience in the German Bundesliga, and time with the likes of Thailand and Jamaica, he was expected to add a great value to Ghanaian football.

However, his exit from the GFA went silent and now, apparently cold, as he revealed the reason to his sacking.

“I was essentially handed the paperwork, with the explanation that the new coach [Carlos Queiroz] was bringing his own staff,” Schäfer said to Transfermarkt.
