The National Sports Authority (NSA) has engaged hawkers, squatters, and other commercial business operators at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi as part of efforts to ease tensions surrounding plans to introduce new commercial structures at the facility.

The engagement, led by the Ashanti Regional Minister and supported by the Mayor of Kumasi, sought to address concerns from groups who have operated businesses around the stadium for several years while also finding a balance between commercial activity, safety and the redevelopment of the facility.

According to NSA Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the discussions resulted in positive conclusions, with stakeholders agreeing on a way forward despite some tensions during the process.

“Today was a highly successful round of engagements at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium,” Mr Ampofo Ankrah said.

“The discussions, led by the Ashanti Regional Minister and supported by the Mayor of Kumasi, involved hawkers, some squatters, and commercial business interests who have been operating there for years.”

He explained that the NSA’s objective is not only to improve the stadium’s infrastructure but also to create opportunities for people whose livelihoods are connected to the facility.

“We focused on creating opportunities while ensuring safety and maintaining the stadium’s beautification,” he stated.

Mr Ampofo Ankrah disclosed that plans for some new structures had been communicated to the affected stakeholders following the engagement.

“Positive conclusions were reached, with plans for a few new structures, communicated to all stakeholders. Despite some tensions, we agreed on a direction forward,” he said.

The NSA Director General also expressed appreciation to the board chairman, Dr Fred Awaah, for his support during the process.

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium is expected to undergo strict assessment by CAF in the coming weeks, as it’s been listed as a potential venue for Ghana’s home matches in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
