Kobena Woyome, a ranking member on the Youth, Sports, and Culture Committee of the Parliament of Ghana, has astonishingly disclosed a staggering amount of $15 million was spent on foods for athletes present at the 2023 African Games.
According to Woyome, the parliamentary committee received a document purporting that the said amount was exhausted in a space of 18 days, from the day the athletes arrived till the very last of them leaving.
“You are spending $245 million, and out of that, we got to know that a whopping amount of $15 million was used to feed athletes for 18 days,” he said to an Accra-based news channel.
Woyome, moreover, revealed that there would be further probing into the matter as the committee has requested explanations of the money spent.
This development follows the contradictory saga ongoing between the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
The Youth, Sports, and Culture Committee has therefore demanded a report from the “games management system” to determine how many athletes were present and registered at the African Games hosted in Accra.
