Akwatia by-election September 2

Date:

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has officially set Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as the date for the Akwatia by-election, following the unfortunate death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

According to the Commission, the declaration complies with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates a by-election when a parliamentary seat becomes vacant. The Akwatia by-election will fill the vacant seat in the Eastern Region.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, July 30, the EC confirmed that nominations will open for individuals interested in contesting the by-election. “The Commission will receive nominations from prospective candidates for the election of a Member of Parliament for the said constituency,” the statement read.

Nomination Period and Requirements

  • Nomination forms are available for download via the official EC website: www.ec.gov.gh from July 30 to August 13, 2025.

  • Forms must be submitted in person or through a proposer or seconder at the Denkyembour District Office from August 11 to 13, between 9:00 am–12:00 pm and 2:00 pm–5:00 pm daily.

To qualify:

  • Each form must be endorsed by a proposer, a seconder, and 18 other registered voters in the constituency.

  • Applicants must also submit two passport-sized photos (full face and ears visible, red background).

Filing Fees

  • Standard filing fee: GH¢10,000

  • Female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs): GH¢7,50

The upcoming Akwatia by-election is crucial for the political dynamics in the Eastern Region and has already begun drawing interest from key parties and civil society. The EC has assured transparency and fair play throughout the process.
