The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has officially set Tuesday, September 2, 2025, as the date for the Akwatia by-election, following the unfortunate death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
According to the Commission, the declaration complies with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates a by-election when a parliamentary seat becomes vacant. The Akwatia by-election will fill the vacant seat in the Eastern Region.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, July 30, the EC confirmed that nominations will open for individuals interested in contesting the by-election. “The Commission will receive nominations from prospective candidates for the election of a Member of Parliament for the said constituency,” the statement read.
Nomination Period and Requirements

Nomination forms are available for download via the official EC website: www.ec.gov.gh from July 30 to August 13, 2025.

Forms must be submitted in person or through a proposer or seconder at the Denkyembour District Office from August 11 to 13, between 9:00 am–12:00 pm and 2:00 pm–5:00 pm daily.

Each form must be endorsed by a proposer, a seconder, and 18 other registered voters in the constituency.

Applicants must also submit two passport-sized photos (full face and ears visible, red background).
