Ghana failed to claim an automatic spot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The Black Queens of Ghana succumbed to a superb comeback display by Malawi on Sunday night.

Ghana, a dominant name in women’s football in Africa, lost not only an automatic World Cup slot, but also a place in the 2026 WAFCON semifinals.

With Africa allocated six slots at the next World Cup to be hosted by Brazil, which begins from June 24 to July 25, there are two more places up for grab.

The 2026 WAFCON quarterfinal losers will take on each other in a playoff before competing in an inter-continental playoff to secure a spot at the Global fiesta.

On August 13, Ghana will take on Ivory Coast, while Nigeria face South Africa.

Ghana would’ve loved to have gotten closer to the continental title, but the main focus, as goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan stated before the quarter-final, was to reach the World Cup.
