The emergency medicine residents of Ghana’s oldest general hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, have admitted the truth in a viral video showing patients lying on the ground.
Despite the chief executive officer of the hospital, Dr Yakubu Seidu Adam, dismissing the video as false, the doctors have revealed otherwise. “The video footage is authentic,” was stated in their press release.
In a press statement issued on Monday, March 23, 2026, the emergency medicine residents of KBTH accused hospital management of attempting to downplay a crisis following the government’s directive of not sending away patients.
The residents also dismissed the hospital’s CEO’s remark of a provision of 200 beds, which they insisted is not enough to cater for patients at the emergency department.
“Beds without functional oxygen points, airway equipment, monitoring tools, adequate floor space, and sufficient nursing and physician staffing ratios do not improve care,” the doctors stated. “They congest an already overwhelmed space.”
