Como Football Club achieved their highest feat in Italian football after reaching the semi-final of the 2025-26 Coppa Italia.
Francesc Fabregas, who has become one of the most sought-after managers in the world, is working wonders with the club.
What most people don’t know is that Como FC was saved from going extinct by a powerful Ghanaian couple in 2017.
The couple, Chelsea legend Michael Essien and his wife, Akosua Puni, bought the club in an auction for €237,000, but struggled to fund the club.
The club was in the third division of Italian football by then, as the couple desired to grow and build, becoming an integral part of it.
Having Lake Como as its popular landmark and tourist destination, the club is now the richest in all of Italy after an Indonesian conglomerate took over for a “meagre” €850,000.
Como won promotion to Serie A for the first time in 21 years, with match tickets sold to fans in 122 different countries, an indicator that the club, too, can attract the masses.
On Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Como FC booked their first Coppa Italia semi-final in their 119 years of existence.
