MAX SPORTS INVESTIGATION: Where Does the 10% Betting Tax Go?

Date:

Former Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has sparked controversy with his remarks following the announcement of the government’s decision to abolish the Betting Tax.

During the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement on March 11, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson declared that the government would scrap the 10% withholding tax on lottery winnings, commonly known as the Betting Tax.

However, speaking to journalists in Parliament shortly after, Dr. Amin Adam accused the government of misleading Ghanaians. He claimed that the NPP administration never implemented the tax, making its supposed abolition meaningless.

“Betting tax that they said they had abolished—we never collected betting tax. We never implemented the betting tax. So to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that was never implemented is to deceive the people of Ghana,” he stated.

His comments have sparked outrage among bettors on social media, with many questioning: “If the tax was never implemented, where did the 10% deducted from our winnings go?”
