Ghana’s AFCON failure is a total embarrassment – Ben Nunoo Mensah

Date:

President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Ben Nunoo Mensah, has pointed out how embarrassing it is for Ghana to miss out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Ghana has always been regarded as a football powerhouse after chalking up numerous successes over the years since its independence from the British in 1957.

The four-time African champions, the Black Stars of Ghana, have seen massive decline in their form since the glory years from 2006 to 2017, putting up incredible performances in the FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.

With their disappointing outing at the last AFCON in Ivory Coast in January 2024, the Black Stars, led by their new head coach Otto Addo, hoped to redeem themselves in Morocco 2025, but failed to win a single match in the qualifying rounds.

According to the GOC president, Ben Nunoo Mensah, this failure is extremely embarrassing, as he reckons Ghanaians have every right to insist Otto Addo be sacked.

“Ghanaians have every right to call for the sack of the coach…I believe that somebody must take responsibility for Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the AFCON tournament. For failing to win a single game in the qualifiers and also failing to qualify for is a total embarrassment,” he said in an interview with an Accra-based radio station.

Despite the poor form in the AFCON qualifiers, Ghana is still in the running for a place at the next FIFA World Cup to be jointly hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States of America, tied on the same points with table-toppers Comoros.

The Ghana Football Association, following the Black Stars’ enormous failure, apologized to the millions of Ghanaian football fans but remain fully confident in the capabilities of Otto Addo to deliver.
