In an attempt to resolve their concerns, the Ministry of Health, in a statement dated Monday, June 17, 2024, urged the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) not to go on strike.
After the Ministry of Finance and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission failed to respond to the union’s requests, the MELPWU declared on June 3 that a nationwide strike would start on June 17.
The MoH has called on the union to be patient with the government’s negotiation team in an effort to speed up the process of their demands being met.
“The government negotiations team led by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has had extensive engagements with MELPWU since 2023 and is guided by both internal and external relativities. Majority of the items proposed by MELPWU have been agreed upon by the government negotiations team. However, Uniform, Special Project, Unsociable, and Communication allowances proposed by the Union are still under various stages of negotiation”.
