GPL Week 28 Review: Hearts, Olympics share spoils, Kotoko beat Ashgold

Date:

Week 28 games of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) were played at several league centers and we recorded some interesting results.

There was the Nzema derby, Ashanti derby, and the Ga Mashie derby as well.

1. Medeama 1-0 Karela

The Nzema derby which came off on Saturday at Tarkwa saw a goalless first half.

The game produced few chances but in the dying embers of the match, former Hearts of Oak defender Vincent Atingah scored a header to give Medeama all three points.

2. Liberty Professionals 3-2 WAFA

The game which was played at the Sogakope Red Bull Arena saw five goals in the game.

Liberty took the lead in the 17th minute but two goals from Augustine Boakye and Justus Torsutsey gave WAFA a first-half lead.

Liberty came back and scored twice through Abraham Wayo to win 3-2.

3. Eleven Wonders 2-1 Bechem United

This was another Bono derby, goals from Teteh Nortey and Alex Asamoah were enough to hand Eleven Wonders victory over Bechem United.

4.Ebusua Dwarfs 1-0 Aduana Stars

Simon Martey scored in the 78th minute as Dwarfs beat Aduana at the Cape Coast Stadium.

5. Dreams FC 2-0 Elmina Sharks

Dreams hosted Elmina Sharks at Dawu and a goal in each half from Abdulai Massaudu and Boateng Mensah gave the Still Believe boys all three points.

6. Berekum Chelsea 5-0 King Faisal

The biggest winners of the weekend were Berekum Chelsea who beat King Faisal 5-0 at the Berekum Golden City Park.

Abdul Basit got a brace with Bright Amponsah, Kofi Owusu, and Paul Atta Agyei scoring the other goals.

7. Kotoko 1-0 AshantiGold

The Porcupine Warriors hosted the original owners of the stadium in the Ashantiderby – having moved their home ground from Accra to Obuasi for the second round of the campaign.

However, Gama’s first half bullet header was all that the Porcupines needed to secure the maximum points at the Len Clay Stadium.

The victory means Kotoko are now in a tight horse race with Hearts of Oak, both on 50 points.

8. Great Olympics 1-1 Hearts of Oak

The Phobians were held to a 1-1 draw game at the Accra Sports Stadium on matchday 28 in the Ga Mashie derby.

The watch witnessed the attendance of Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi who is in his native country for vacation.

The Phobians after having Isaac Mensah’s first-half goal disallowed finally found the breakthrough in the second half.

Emmanuel Nettey’s connected home from Salifu Ibrahim’s cross to put his side ahead.

However, any hopes of holding onto the lead were shattered as Maxwell Abbey Quaye stole ahead of his marker to head home the equalizer for Great Olympics.

The result means Hearts still remain top of the table by virtue of superior goal difference with 50 points ahead of bitter rivals Asante Kotoko.
