Seek permission before building speed ramps – Amoako-Attah to Regional Highway Authority Heads

Date:

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah is asking all regional heads within the sector to acquire adequate permission before embarking on road projects.

He made this known after ordering for the construction of some speed ramps at Apam junction to be put on hold.

In an interaction with Samuel Akuoko, who is the Central Regional Director of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA), Mr. Amoako-Attah noted that all laid down procedures must be duly followed.

“The Regional Directors should be careful. They should go through the full process of getting authorization before the construction of speed ramps is done. Drivers are complaining about the many speed ramps. So I direct that the contractor puts this work on hold.”

Recently, the Minister tasked a seven-member committee to audit all speed ramps on the country’s roads.

He argued that many of the ramps are a nuisance to motorists and insisted that all unauthorized ramps must be removed.

Mr. Amoako–Atta said illegal speed ramps are a danger to motorists, hence the call.

“They have become a nuisance on our country. People no longer enjoy driving on our trunk roads, and it has become problematic and a nightmare, particularly to our heavy vehicular drivers.”

Mr. Amoako-Attah also indicated that his outfit will embark on a decongestion exercise to get rid of structures that are situated within the country’s road corridors.

He warned that there will be no leniency in the matter.

“We will go into action, and we are not going to plead with people even though we won’t act arbitrarily,” the minister said.

Mr. Amoako-Attah ultimately said these actions will be in the national interest.

“Let me serve notice to all those who have inundated our streets and the road corridors with kiosks and other unauthorised structures that the interest of the people of this country supersedes any personal interest.”
