GOC: Former world’s fastest man Asafa Powell arrives in Ghana

Date:

On invitation from the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) , former world sprint record holder Asafa Powell has arrived in Ghana for a 10-day stay.

On Monday, February 27, 2023, the former 100-meter world record holder was welcomed at the Kotoka International Airport along with his Ghanaian bride, Alyshia Powell.

Between June 2005 and May 2008, the Jamaican set the 100-meter world record twice with speeds of 9.77 and 9.74 seconds.

The sprinter has never finished a race in more than 10 seconds, and his best time of 9.72 seconds places him in fourth place all-time among men who have run the 100-meter distance.

The GOC President, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, had told the media that the 40-year-old will take part in a number of charitable and social activities while in Ghana, which would be covered by both local and international media.

“Asafa will pay a courtesy call on H.E. the President of the Republic at the Jubilee House and also engage the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS), the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), the Local Organising Committee of the African Games in Accra in 2023, as well as the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) on how best Ghana sports can benefit from his huge image on the international sports arena,” he said.

Along with enhancing relationships between Ghana and Jamaica, Asafa’s visit will also allow him to attend numerous sports clinics, visit some senior and junior high schools, and tour all of the sports venues being built for the upcoming All African Games, which will be held in Accra.
