Tributes pour in as former chairman of the GFA Alhaji Jawula goes home on Sunday

Date:

The funeral for Alhaji Mohammed Nuru Deen Jawula, the former president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) who passed away in Nashville, Tennessee, will take place on January 22, 2023.

The Islamic burial ritual will take place at the ICN Bellevue Masjid, located at 7337 Charlotte Park in Nashville, USA.

At the age of 74, Lepowura MND Jawulia passed away on Saturday.

From 1997 until 2001, he oversaw Ghana’s football operations. During his administration, the U-17 team finished second and third in the respective 1997 and 1999 World Cups, and the U-20 squad finished second in the 2001 World Cup.

He served as the head of the Ghana Premier League Management Committee, a member of the CAF Interclub Committee, and a board member of Real Tamale United, a GPL team, until his death.

Alhaji Jawula has received numerous tributes from people in the athletic community. Some Ghanaians think Alhaji Jawula significantly influenced the development of football in the nation.

Below is brief information about Alhaji Jawula :

He was born in May 1949 to a wealthy Ghanaian family in the Accra district of Cowlane. When he was three years old, his mother and step-siblings were banished to the north since his father was the chief of Kpandai.

Jawula got involved in politics while still in high school and rose to the position of prefect at Tamale Secondary School.

After completing sixth grade, the young Jawula was admitted in 1968 to the University of Cape Coast, where he pursued his first degree in English and Economics.

He attended the University of Ghana, Legon, to complete a Master’s degree in African literature.

He visited Canada in 1989 as a fellow at the University of Carlton in Ottawa. Upon his return, he served in a number of ministries, including the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Harbours and Railways, and the Ministry of Finance as an administrator and Chief Director before retiring with honor. He is known by the traditional name Lepowura.
