2027 AFRICA GAMES: Egypt To Host Next Edition

Date:

Egypt has been selected to host the upcoming 14th African Games. The ceremonial passing of the African Union flag occurred during the closing ceremony of the 13th edition of the African Games, which took place successfully in Accra, Ghana.

Hon. Mustapha Ussif, Ghana’s Minister of Youth & Sports, transferred the flag to Minata Samate Cessouma, the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development, who then handed it over to Ashraf Sobhy, Egypt’s Minister of Youth & Sports.

Ghana had the honor of hosting the African Games for the first time since its inception in 1965. This will be the second time Egypt hosts this prestigious sports event.

Egypt emerged as the overall winner at Accra 2023, clinching a total of 187 medals (99 gold, 46 silver, and 42 bronze). Ghana secured sixth place with 68 medals (19 gold, 26 silver, and 20 bronze), a feat that brought joy to both sports authorities and the Ghanaian populace, with hopes set on aiming for a top-three position in the next edition.

In his farewell speech, President Akufo-Addo expressed pride and gratitude, emphasizing how the event served as an avenue to strengthen bonds and socio-economic relations among African nations. He commended the over 5,000 athletes for their exceptional performances and lauded the commitment of officials and volunteers.

President Akufo-Addo hailed the African Games as a testament to the true spirit of African diversity and unity, promoting the continent’s collective advancement. He highlighted the remarkable displays of sportsmanship and competition, inspiring upcoming athletes to strive for excellence.

Despite challenges, Ghana successfully provided world-class sporting facilities, including the Borteyman Sports Complex, University of Ghana Stadium, Theodosia Okoh Stadium, Achimota Cricket Oval, and Bukom Boxing Arena. The President expressed confidence in maintaining these facilities for future champions’ training and hosting local and international tournaments, with plans underway for the establishment of a University of Sports for Development.

He thanked all Ghanaians for their enthusiastic support throughout the competition and urged athletes to carry their momentum into the Paris Olympics, bringing further glory to Africa.

In conclusion, President Akufo-Addo envisioned a brighter, more prosperous, and united future for Africa, fueled by the inspiration of the African Games. He officially declared the 13th African Games (Accra 2023) successfully concluded.
