The Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 2023 African Games, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, has clarified that the insurance expenditure for the event was 3.9 million Ghana Cedis, not the previously reported $4.5 million.
In a press briefing aimed at addressing misinformation surrounding the Games, Dr. Ofosu-Asare emphasized that the insurance amount was specifically 3,931,402.64 Ghana Cedis. He expressed concern over the inaccuracies being circulated in the media, stating, “We never spent the taxpayer’s money to the tune of $4.5 million on insurance.”
The 13th African Games took place in Ghana from March 8 to March 23, with events primarily held at the newly constructed Borteyman Sports Complex and the renovated University of Ghana Stadium. Dr. Ofosu-Asare explained that the LOC’s delayed response to these controversies was due to their commitment to compiling a comprehensive report following the Games, ensuring that all information shared is accurate and well-founded.
