WATCH: Carragher & AFCON Row: “He Spoke the Minds of Most Europeans” – Nuhu Adams

Date:

The controversy surrounding Jamie Carragher’s comments on the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) continues to spark debates, with Ghanaian football analyst Nuhu Adams weighing in on the issue.

Speaking on Max Sports Pack, Adams stated that Carragher’s remarks reflect the broader sentiment held by many Europeans regarding the timing and significance of AFCON.

The former Liverpool defender had earlier criticized the tournament’s scheduling, suggesting that it disrupts European club football. His comments received widespread backlash from African footballers and fans, who defended AFCON as a premier continental tournament deserving of respect.

Nuhu Adams, however, believes Carragher’s statement, though controversial, represents the unspoken thoughts of several European football stakeholders. “He just voiced what many Europeans think but won’t say publicly,” Adams remarked. “There’s still a perception that African football is secondary to European club football, and that’s why AFCON is often seen as an inconvenience rather than a prestigious competition.”

He further argued that the debate highlights the need for a shift in mindset regarding African football. “AFCON is as important to Africa as the Euros are to Europe. The argument that it disrupts European leagues ignores the fact that European clubs benefit massively from African talents. They must learn to respect our tournament just as they do others.”

The debate continues to stir reactions across football circles, with many calling for better recognition of AFCON on the global stage.
