The United States of America men’s soccer national team beat Canada by a 1-0 scoreline on Tuesday evening to complete a perfect run in the September-October international break.
Striker Justin Ellis scored the match winner on the 29th minute to put the Americans ahead. The Orlando City striker is one of the revelations of this window. The nineteen-year-old striker scored two goals in three appearances for his country. The first half ended with the Americans in the lead.
Back from the halftime break, both sides stepped up in search of goals. Canada manager Jesse Marsch effected triple substitutions to tweak his formation from the traditional 4-4-2 to a more attacking 4-3-3 with variations of 4-2-4, but American manager Mauricio Pochetino responded by switching to a more conservative 4-2-3-1 formation. That switch gave the Americans an extra body in the holding midfield battles. It brought a perfect balance and stability to their play. It gave the trio of Albert, Tillman and Musah the freedom to attack upfront on the counterattack anytime they had the opportunity.
Although the second half of the game was lively and presented both teams with more attacking opportunities, neither team managed to score. The game ended with the USA winning it by a slim margin.
The United States of America ended this international break with a perfect record in four straight games. They played four and won four in this window to kickstart a perfect rebuilding process after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They beat Peru by 4-1, defeated Chile 4-1, dispatched Mexico 3-0 and completed the perfect run by defeating Canada by a 1-0 scoreline in the process.
