Retired referee and instructor Thomas Nunoo has charged young referees to make a good name for themselves in the game.
Referees in the Ghana Premier League (GPL), since the Anas exposé in 2012, have been viewed in a negative light.
Stakeholders, including the Referees Association Ghana (RAG) and the Referees Manager under the Ghana Football Association (GFA), have worked tirelessly to clean up the image of referees in the country.
Thomas Nunoo, known for his exceptional professionalism during his active days, noted that there are millions of eyes on the performances of referees in the country.
Their performances contribute to the merits of receiving international assignments, either from CAF or FIFA.
“You have to carry your own destiny. Make a name for yourself. Be mentioned when good referees are mentioned,” he said on Max FM’s Sports Pack Show.
Though Ghana barely gets represented in global tournaments by her referees, Daniel Laryea came close to being assigned to one of the FIFA competitions, he revealed.
He rejected the notion that referees deliberately favour some clubs to win matches.
“I don’t believe refs deliberately favour some clubs unless it is proven beyond reasonable doubt,” he added on the show.
