JUST IN: Kurt Okraku seeks CAF Executive position

Date:

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has officially submitted his nomination to contest for a position on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee. This announcement comes ahead of the upcoming elections slated for March 2025.

Mr. Okraku is set to run unopposed for the seat, representing the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B, a significant bloc within African football governance.

This unchallenged candidacy arises as Djibril Hamidou, the current WAFU Zone B representative on the CAF Executive Committee and President of the Niger Football Association, shifts his focus to pursuing a seat on the FIFA Council.

The development marks a strategic culmination of an agreement reached in March 2021. At that time, Mr. Okraku withdrew his bid for the CAF Executive Committee position to support Mr. Hamidou’s continuation in the role. In exchange, Okraku assumed the presidency of WAFU Zone B, bolstering his influence within the regional football governance structure.

With this move, Mr. Okraku aims to further elevate the voice of WAFU Zone B and Ghanaian football within the CAF Executive Committee, positioning the region as a critical player in the development of African football.
