GARID Begins Major Drainage Works Along Kaneshie Corrido

The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project, GARID, has commenced major drainage works along the Kaneshie corridor, as part of efforts to tackle the recurring flooding in the area.

The project involves the construction of an underground storm drain from the Accra Academy area to Pamprom Junction and will require sections of the road to be closed to traffic.

Motorists and commuters using the affected routes are therefore expected to brace for traffic diversions as the works progress.

For years, residents and businesses in the Kaneshie enclave have had to contend with the devastating effects of flooding, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

But that could soon change as the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development Project, GARID, begins work on a major underground drainage system intended to improve stormwater management and reduce the risk of flooding in the area.

The project involves the construction of an underground storm drain stretching from the Accra Academy area through to Pamprom Junction.

Speaking to MaxTV, the project coordinator for GARID, Ohene Sarfo, says the works are being carried out in phases and are expected to take approximately one year to complete.

He added that as part of the construction, sections of the road will be closed to traffic, with motorists expected to use designated alternative routes.

“The project is expected to be completed within a year and will be executed in phases. The first phase will cover the stretch from the Roundabout to Pamprom Junction, while the second phase will extend from Pamprom Junction to First Light. The final phase will run from First Light to the ongoing project at Accra Academy.

We are all aware of how flooding has affected the Kaneshie enclave. This project seeks to construct an underground storm drain that will facilitate the free flow of rainwater and help prevent flooding in the area, he said”.

The project coordinator, Ohene Sarfo, is therefore appealing to motorists and commuters to exercise patience and cooperate with the traffic management measures during the construction period.

He says although the road closures may create temporary inconvenience, the completed drainage system will help address the persistent flooding and sanitation challenges in the Kaneshie area.

“We want the best for everyone, and we therefore appeal to all stakeholders and residents to support the project to ensure its successful completion, he added.”

But some commuters and business operators in the area have raised concerns about the timing and points of the road closures.

They fear that the closure could affect the movement of customers and ultimately disrupt their businesses.

Despite these concerns, GARID says the road closures form part of the broader plan to complete the drainage project.

The project is expected to provide a long-term solution to the recurring flooding in the Kaneshie enclave, while improving sanitation and drainage infrastructure in the area.
