Accra Great Olympics and WaterAid Conduct COVID-19 Outreach at Ga Mashie & Korle Gonno

Accra Great Olympics and WaterAid Ghana have signed a partnership to use football as a tool for community engagement to drive behaviour change around Covid-19 prevention protocols. The programme will target coastal communities in Accra and Tema.

The second outreach was conducted at Ga-Mashie and Korle Gonno on Monday 3rd May 2021.
The joint team conducted street to street and door to door messaging, engaged taxi drivers, the youth and market women and distributed face masks, sanitizers, T-shirts and baseball caps to the community including the Jamestown divisional police headquarters, Korle bu Police station.  The purpose of the outreach program was to educate the residents of the communities on the Covid-19 prevention protocols.

The Accra Great Olympics team was led by Ato Coleman, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) and included Great Olympics legend and 1982 Nations Cup Goal king, George Alhassan;  team captain, Gladstone Awako among other players, the technical team, as well as Great Olympics supporters who reside in Ga Mashie and Korle Gonno and were selected as community volunteers.

The outreach began at Mantse Agbona, Salaga market, Accra Central, Bukom, Akoto Lante, Korle Bu and ended at Korle Gonno. Captain Awako led donations at Bukom and Akoto Lante where he presented items to Youth Joints as well as the Korle Gonno Tuesday market where he shared items with the Market Queen of the market. WaterAid Ghana was led by Mr George Yorke and supported by Joseph Appiah, Head of Business Development and Robert Bruce.

In his address, Mr Ato Coleman expressed delight with the turnout and commended the participation of Faruk a well known Accra Hearts of Oak supporter which showed unity among the fans of both clubs in the fight to eliminate COVID-19.

He praised Great Olympics supporters for the brilliant COVID-19 compliant behaviour protocols during their last home match with Liberty Professionals and encouraged them to consistently comply with the protocols during both home and away matches.

The Captain of the team, Gladson Awako appreciated the support of the fans and appealed to them to comply with the Covid-19 protocols.

Mr George Yorke a representative from WaterAid stressed that his organization’s focus was to ensure communities have access to quality water, sanitation and hygiene and was impressed with the progress of the partnership with Great Olympics in the fight to defeat Covid-19.
