Here Is Why Government Can’t Touch The GFA

Date:

Ghana’s minister for sports and recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, has explained why the government cannot dissolve the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Calls had begun ringing out for the dissolution of the GFA or the dismissal of its president, Mr Kurt Okraku, by the President of Ghana from the public.

The calls became rife following Ghana’s wonderfully disastrous start to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, especially after a 4-2 home defeat to the Gambia on Tuesday, September 30.

Speaking with Joy FM following viral news of the sacking of Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz and National Sports Authority Director General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Hon. Adams shared why the government can’t interfere in the affairs of the GFA.

“Government has power because the national teams they superintend belong to us… We want to make sure the public interest committee works and works for the good of all of us, but government cannot dissolve the FA because it is a registered entity that pays taxes and everything that they are supposed to pay to the appropriate authorities.

If, however, they use that group to commit any crime and it is proven the necessary rules will apply.”

No government can get into the dealings of a football association because all member associations are protected under FIFA statutes. Going against the statutes will result in a ban from all competitions.

Mr Kurt Okraku is currently serving his second term as the president of the GFA. He is also seeking a third term in office and aims at becoming the next CAF president.
