Bastian Schweinsteiger has been accused of racial stereotyping after remarks he made about Ivory Coast.
The former German international’s comments are said to have colonial roots by Philipp Awounou, a Black German journalist and author.
Jurgen Klopp walked out of an interview after he was questioned about Schweinsteiger’s description of Ivory Coast’s style of play as “wild” and typical “African football”.
“Everybody likes it, so you bring me into this situation. It’s not my job that everybody likes it, but it is a serious subject, and I don’t even know what is appropriate to say,” said the former Liverpool boss.
Schweinsteiger’s remarks were met with criticism on social media and by commentators in Germany.
But Awounou insisted Schweinsteiger was not a racist but rather problematic.
