Rent Control Commissioner Mr Federick Opoku has warned Prestige Hostels not to implement the rent increment it intends to.
University students cried foul after news circulated about certain hostels’ new pricing ahead of the new semesters.
The Rent Control Commissioner swiftly acted by visiting these hostels, one of which is Prestige Hostel, located opposite the University of Professional Studies, as the issue falls within its regulatory mandate.
Speaking to a manager at the Prestige Hostel, Mr Opoku stated emphatically that it had no right to increase its prices, hence directing the halt of its implementation until the pricing mechanism is produced for rent control.
“You don’t have any right to increase your rent. “You have been making the mistake of increasing the rent. “You don’t have any right whatsoever without talking to Rent Control,” said Mr Opoku.
He demanded that every student be given a rent card. Questioning the pricing, he assumed since students pay for their own electricity, the price doesn’t need to increase every semester. A pricing mechanism from the management of the hostel might provide clarity.
