SHOCKING!!!:Senegal sacks AFCON-winning coach Aliou Cisse

Date:

Senegal has officially parted ways with coach Aliou Cisse, who famously led the team to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2022 and guided them through two World Cup tournaments.

The decision was initiated by Senegal’s sports minister, Khady Diene Gaye, responding to a government request to not renew Cisse’s contract, as confirmed by the national football association. Cisse, a former captain of the national team and Paris Saint-Germain player, took the helm in 2015 and achieved historic success with Senegal’s first AFCON title two years ago.

Under his leadership, the team reached the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup but faced disappointment in this year’s AFCON, where they were eliminated by the eventual champions, Ivory Coast.

In the interim, the Senegalese FA has announced that a temporary coaching team will take charge for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Malawi later this month. Currently, Senegal sits level with Burkina Faso on four points from two matches in their group, which also includes Burundi.

They remain unbeaten in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers but trail group leaders Sudan by two points after four games.
