In relation to the killings of well-known South African rapper Kiernan Forbes, popularly known as AKA, and his close friend Tebello “Tibz” Motshoane, a well-known chef and businessman, six suspects have been detained.
The two were shot dead in front of a Durban restaurant a year ago in a shocking murder that took place throughout South Africa. Hitmen were paid to attack AKA, but no reason was given. He had several singles during his career, including one with Burna Boy of Nigeria.
On Thursday, the suspects—all of whom are under 36—are expected to appear in court. The KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, stated in a press briefing on Tuesday night, “It was clear that AKA was monitored from the airport and Tibz was not the intended target in the murder on Florida Road in Durban; we know they were paid for this.”
At the press conference, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the provincial police commissioner, informed reporters that a number of the people arrested had connections to separate murder cases.
According to him, two of the suspects have fled to neighboring Eswatini. Nonetheless, they were detained by police working with Interpol and the Eswatini administration, and extradition procedures would soon start.
The police, according to Mkhwanazi, were suspicious about the motive, but they did not talk about it.
With several famous people among the dead, South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world.
