2022/23 GPL Wk 17: Hearts of Oak beat Berekum Chelsea 3-1 in Accra

Date:

The Phobians overcame Berekum Chelsea at the Accra Sports Stadium on matchday 17 of the ongoing 2022/2023 betPawa Ghana Premier League (BPL) thanks to Hearts of Oak’s determined effort in the second half.

Hearts of Oak defeated the Blues 3-1 on Saturday, February 11, 2023, although after a very unproductive first half at the Accra Sports Stadium, they were able to get back on top thanks to three goals in the second half.

Accra Hearts of Oak urgently needed victory in this match after a terrible performance and a 1-0 loss to Real Tamale United on Sunday, February 5, 2023 at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.

The Phobians needed to defeat Berekum Chelsea in order to maintain their chances of finishing the season with a trophy after Dreams FC eliminated them from the MTN FA Cup in the round of 32.

Gladson Awako and Ibrahim Salifu of Accra Hearts of Oak completely controlled the game in midfield, but they were unable to take the lead in the first half due to Ernest Sowah’s outstanding goalkeeping abilities and the Phobians’ carelessness.

Chelsea, on the other hand, did not generate many chances, and Amankona was unable to make the home team pay for defensive errors.

Hearts of Oak picked up where they left off in the second half while Chelsea started off quite slowly. The lost opportunities continued as Linda Ntange squandered a clear opportunity in the 56th minute.

In the 83rd minute, Dennis Korsah’s shot was deflected by Collins Ameyaw’s leg and found the back of the net to give Hearts of Oak their first goal.

Three minutes later, Benjamin York added the second, while Hearts of Oak replacement Victor Aidoo added the third in the extra period.

For Berekum Chelsea, Zakaria Fuseni scored the late consolation goal, bringing the score to 3-1.

After this victory, Accra Hearts of Oak are currently second in the standings, while Berekum Chelsea are still in tenth.
