Mexico 2026: “We have to be fully prepared for the world stage”—Black Challenge Head Coach warns

Date:

Black Challenge Head Coach Stephen Richard Obeng has warned the team to be fully prepared for the challenge on the world stage ahead of the start of the World Amputee Football Federation (WAFF) 2026 World Cup in Mexico.

The Black Challenge will aim for its maiden world title as it takes on 23 other countries at the mundial in Central America next month.

The team has been training in Accra since camp opened a couple of weeks ago as preparations for the World Cup intensify.

Speaking at one of their training sessions at the University of Ghana, Coach Richard Obeng expressed his satisfaction with the performance of the players at training.

“I’m really proud of the team that is the Black Challenge. Of the twenty we called up, by the grace of God, we have our final fifteen, and you can see those are the people we are working with. And I must say I’m very proud of them.”

He also went on to issue a warning to the entire team to be fully prepared heading into the tournament next month. He reiterated that there’s more work to be done since heading into the competition as reigning African champions brings some additional pressure on the team.

“We still have some work to do. We are not going to say we are done. No, we have to be fully prepared because this is the world stage, and we are going to fight harder to go and represent Ghana. Every match is like a final game to us. That is how I’m psyching up the mindset of my boys: we are the African champions, we have conquered Africa, and now this is the world stage,” he said.

Ghana has been drawn in Group D at the upcoming World Cup together with African Giants and once World Cup winners, Angola, Colombia, and Iraq.

The three-time African champions enter the global tournament with a strong reputation as the reigning continental kings and will be aiming to improve their two-time quarter-final finishes at the World Cup, thus making it into the final four for the first time.

The 2026 WAFF World Cup will run from the 13th to the 22nd of November 2026 at San Juan de los Lagos in Mexico.
