PHOTOSTORY: Reckless Pedestrians Snub New Tetegu Footbridge

Date:

Despite the construction of a new overhead footbridge at Tetegu in the Weija-Gbawe Municipality, some reckless pedestrians continue to endanger their lives by crossing the fast-moving Accra-Kasoa highway—one of Accra’s busiest roads and part of the ECOWAS Expressway network.

The bridge was built after authorities removed a traffic light previously installed at the crossing point, as it hindered the free flow of traffic. The expectation was that the footbridge would offer a safer alternative for pedestrians and reduce accidents on the highway.

However, a visit by media men  revealed that while some residents use the bridge, many carelessly ignore it, darting across the road amid high-speed traffic. This disregard for safety has drawn condemnation from both motorists and concerned citizens.

Commercial driver Joseph Danso, who plies the Kasoa-Lapaz route, said the continued non-usage of the Tetegu footbridge reflects a dangerous culture of traffic lawlessness. “There’s no excuse. The bridge is there for their safety,” he insisted.

One pedestrian, Madam Amaley Okain, who crossed the road instead of using the bridge, cited a knee condition as her reason, though observers argue more accessible alternatives or assistance could be sought rather than risking lives.

A resident who identified himself as a concerned citizen called for police intervention, including arrests and prosecutions, to enforce the use of the bridge and ensure public investment in infrastructure is respected.

Across Accra, such scenes are not uncommon, with footbridges often left unused by pedestrians who gamble with their safety. Authorities are being urged to increase public education, improve accessibility, and enforce traffic regulations to save lives.
