Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang becomes Ghana’s first female vice president

Date:

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has been sworn in as the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, marking a historic milestone as the first woman to hold this esteemed position in the nation’s history.

The swearing-in ceremony, held on January 7, 2025, took place at the iconic Independence Square in Accra. Chief Justice Her Ladyship Gertrude Torkornoo administered the Oath of Allegiance and the Vice President’s Oath, officially ushering in a new era in Ghana’s political landscape.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s rise to the vice presidency follows her role as the running mate to President John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 general elections. Together, they secured a resounding victory over the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, enabling Mahama to reclaim the presidency for his second term.

With an illustrious career in education and public service, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang brings a wealth of expertise and a commitment to national development. Her leadership is expected to drive transformative initiatives, particularly in promoting gender equality, advancing education reforms, and empowering Ghanaian youth.

Her groundbreaking appointment as Vice President not only signals progress in women’s representation in leadership but also inspires hope for a more inclusive future for Ghana.
