Supreme court to rule on anti-gay bill on December 18

Date:

The Supreme Court is scheduled to rule on the two lawsuits contesting the validity of the Human and Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also referred to as the anti-gay bill, on December 18, 2024.

The Human and Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, a bipartisan private member’s bill, was approved by Parliament on February 28, 2024.

After giving lawyers permission to make changes to their statement of case within two days, a seven-member panel of the Supreme Court, presided over by Justice Avril Lovelace Johnson, set a deadline for the defendants to submit their responses by November 27, 2024, and Richard Sky to do so.

Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Barbara Ackah-Yensu, Samuel Asiedu, Ernest Gaewu, Yaw Asare Darko, and Richard Adjei-Frimpong are the other panelists.

Members of the House supported the bill, which, if approved by the president, would punish homosexuals and homosexual activity supporters in Ghana with a minimum sentence of three years in prison and a maximum sentence of five years.
