The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers, meeting the October 16, 2026, deadline agreed between the government and teacher unions.

The payment follows a strike by teacher unions that lasted more than a week and was called off after government intervention and assurances that the outstanding arrears would be paid.

In a statement issued on October 16 and signed by its Head of Public Relations, Cephas N. Dosoo, the CAGD said 49,725 teachers received their payments on October 15, alongside their October salaries, covering salary adjustments and arrears dating from January 1, 2026. Another 6,278 teachers were paid in September 2026.

The Department said the payments were completed ahead of the deadline agreed at a meeting between government representatives and teacher unions at the Ministry of Education on October 2, 2026.

According to the statement, approximately 80,000 teachers were reported to have been promoted. However, the GES had processed and submitted supporting documents for only 56,633 teachers for verification and payment.

Of these, 56,003 teachers had been verified and paid, while 630 cases remained pending due to issues identified during the verification process.

The CAGD said it was awaiting the resolution of the outstanding issues by the GES before the affected teachers could be paid.

It added that 23,367 promoted teachers were yet to be processed by the GES, with the necessary supporting documents still to be submitted for verification.

The Department maintained that it had paid all teachers whose submitted records met the required payroll criteria and assured affected teachers that outstanding eligible payments would be processed once the necessary corrections were made or complete and accurate documents were received and verified.

The CAGD also expressed appreciation to the GES, teacher unions, and the ministries and agencies involved for their cooperation in facilitating the payments.
