Why Kwesi Appiah has been the best Black Stars coach since 2014

Date:

Former Black Stars captain and head coach James Kwesi Appiah has been described as the best coach Ghana has had since 2014 by Ignatius Kwame Osei Fosu.

Kwesi Appiah returned to his position as head coach of Ghana in 2017, replacing former Chelsea manager Avram Grant, who incidentally was appointed in 2014 after the country’s World Cup fiasco in Brazil.

The seven-time Ghana Premier League champion with Asante Kotoko during his playing days remains the only Ghanaian coach to qualify his country for the FIFA World Cup, after finishing fourth twice at the 2012 and 2013 Africa Cup of Nations during his first stint from 2012 to 2014.

Osei Fosu, famously once referred to as “junior Mourinho” by adoring fans while coaching Techiman Eleven Wise, in an interview on the GPL Headquarters Show, expressed admiration to Kwesi Appiah, whom he is assistant to on the Sudanese national team.

“Kwesi Appiah is the best coach in the last 10 years to have handled the Black Stars,” Osei Fosu said to Yaw Ampofo Ankrah as he eulogized his mentor.

Kenpong Football Academy appointed Appiah, a former mentee of the late Fred Osam-Duodu, head coach in 2021 but missed out on the team manager role for the Black Stars before taking the Sudan job, a job that cements his place among Africa’s most famous coaches.

He was replaced by another former Ghanaian international, Charles Akonnor, in 2020 after recording 37 wins out of 54 competitive matches, an enviable record the since his time till now would wish for.
