Mert Gunok’s superb save proved crucial for Turkey, as they secured a vital 2-1 victory over Austria to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2024 European Championship.
Merih Demiral netted twice at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig as Michael Gregoritsch pulled one back for the Austrians.
Demiral scored the quickest knockout goal in the history of the tournament after he headed home Arder Guler’s cross just 57 seconds into the game before combining with the Real Madrid starlet again in the 59th minute to double Turkey’s lead.
Marcel Sabitzer’s corner kick five minutes later was flicked on by Stefan Posch and turned home by Gregoritsch to halve the deficit, but the Turkish held on to seal their passage.
Vicenzo Montella’s men will next face off against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Netherlands easily dispatched off Romania thanks to Dolen Malen’s late brace and a goal from Cody Gakpo at the Fußball Arena München.
