The Chief Examiner at the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has cited reasons for the poor performance of candidates of the 2025 WASSCE.
A total number of 461,736 candidates sat for the annual senior high school examination, of which over 200,000 failed in the core subjects.
Integrated Science
Candidates were poor and struggled with the spelling of certain scientific terminologies, the definition of relative atomic mass, graph work, and the calculation of slope in integrated science.
They were furthermore unable to draw the bar magnet and lines of force, describe post-harvest practices such as winnowing, dehusking, and shelling, reagents for testing foods in the laboratory, and draw genetic diagrams.
Social Studies
In the study of social sciences and humanities, social studies, the candidates shockingly could not highlight the adverse effect of expensive funerals on the country’s development, explain simple government policies, and discuss Ghana’s relations with the United Nations organisations.
Mathematics
The Chief Examiner reported that candidates struggled in solving simple interest applications, word problems, and interpreting results from cumulative frequency data.
They also showed weaknesses in representing mathematical information in diagrams, solving global maths-related problems, constructing cumulative frequency tables and making deductions from real-life problems.
