The Member of Parliament-elect for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will officially be sworn into office today, Tuesday, July 22, 2025, by Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin.
Her swearing-in comes on the heels of a hard-fought victory in the recently held parliamentary rerun in the constituency. The rerun was necessitated after the Electoral Commission (EC) annulled the original December 2024 results due to electoral irregularities, including unauthenticated pink sheets and unsigned results from 19 polling stations.
In the rerun earlier this month, Aubynn narrowly defeated the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Akua Afriyie, by polling 34,090 votes against Afriyie’s 33,881—a difference of just 209 votes.
Aubynn’s election is a strategic win for the NDC, giving the party a two-thirds majority in Ghana’s 275-member Parliament. This enhanced majority grants the NDC significant power over legislative decisions, including constitutional amendments, critical appointments, and reforms requiring supermajority approval.
The swearing-in ceremony, which takes place during today’s parliamentary sitting, is expected to attract senior NDC figures, lawmakers, and other dignitaries. It also marks a pivotal moment in the party’s 2025 legislative strategy, as it seeks to deepen its parliamentary influence and drive national reforms.
